Who We Are

An indigenous humanitarian and development organisation, founded and run by people from the communities it serves.

Bread for the Needy (BREFON) is an indigenous, voluntary, non-political, non-religious and non-profit humanitarian and development organisation founded in 2019, with its head office in Gulu City, Northern Uganda.

BREFON works to improve the lives of vulnerable individuals, families and communities through integrated humanitarian assistance and sustainable community development programmes. We implement work across mental health and psychosocial support, healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene, education, child protection, cultural and spiritual restoration, livelihoods and economic empowerment, disaster preparedness and response, and community resilience strengthening.

Special attention is given to children, women, youth, older persons, persons with disabilities, refugees, returnees and war victims, and other vulnerable groups affected by natural and human-made disasters.

Why we exist

Northern Uganda carries the long tail of the Lord's Resistance Army insurgency. Communities returned from displacement camps to land, homes and relationships that had been broken for a generation. Survivors came back with injuries that were not visible. Children conceived in captivity came back to communities that were not sure they belonged.

The emergency ended. The need did not. Mental health services remain scarce, stigma remains heavy, and the households carrying the heaviest burden are often the ones with the least income. BREFON was formed by people from these communities to close that gap — with clinical care where it is needed, and with the practical means for a household to stand on its own.

Trauma, poverty and exclusion do not arrive one at a time. We do not treat them one at a time.
How we work

What shapes our approach

Rooted, not visiting

Our staff and volunteers are from the Acholi sub-region. We speak the language, we know the clan structures, and we are still there after the project cycle ends.

Integrated, not siloed

Counselling without an income rarely holds. Our programmes are designed to work together around the same household rather than in parallel.

Alongside existing systems

We work with health facilities, Village Health Teams, schools, cultural and religious leaders, and district government — strengthening what is there rather than replacing it.

What guides us

Our core values

Integrity

We uphold honesty, ethical conduct, transparency and accountability in all our actions, while maintaining the trust of the communities, partners, donors and people we serve.

Accountability

We take responsibility for our actions, decisions and resources, while ensuring transparency, effectiveness and responsiveness to the people we serve and our partners.

Compassion

We place people at the centre of our work, providing care, empathy, respect and support to individuals and communities facing hardship and vulnerability.

Respect for Human Dignity

We value the worth, rights and dignity of every person by promoting respect, fairness, inclusion and equal treatment regardless of background or circumstances.

Inclusiveness

We create opportunities for participation and access to services for the most socially vulnerable, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Partnership

We work with government institutions, cultural and faith leaders, health facilities, civil society and development partners, because lasting change is built together.
